This Saturday at Bar Rambla (or Malbar as the sign says) hosted a very special vernissage for up and coming Montreal based artist Ariel Lacombe. This exhibit is comprised of all of her current works. All her pieces are acrylic on canvas, their names taking inspiration from various literary works. She also draws various inspiration from both abstract expressionism and impressionism alike. She mentions Jackson Pollock, Rothko and Matisse as main artists that her work is inspired by.

Having started to paint almost exactly a year ago, after her creativity was sparked by a specific romantic era piece, Ariel is excited to see all her work paying off. She has sold various various pieces to many clients, and you can see her work in other bars and restaurants around the city.

Though the venue was almost too small to host her works of art, which were rather large in size. The lighting was offered mainly by the large open terrace windows, which flooded some of her pieces, and gave them an added dimension of mystery. A particular piece that stuck out, was the massive painting entitled Lasciate ogni speranza voi ch’entrate (Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here) from Dante Alighieri’s famous Inferno. This piece was much like a Rorschach blot, everyone saw something different in it, and every time I would return to gawk at it, I would find something new in the paint smears.

Overall, her abstract work and way with colours and texture is something I admire greatly, and with that said, I hope to be seeing more of her work around the city, and hopefully more exhibits where which her work will be exhibited.
