Fear and Loathing South of the 40 Special Bonus: Quebec Election 2014

Montreal Riding Breakdown

Well, nobody saw that coming. Quebec sent out a clear message yesterday. We aren’t buying what Marois and the Parti Quebecois is selling (at least not right now). Call up your Anglo and Muslim friends to let them know they can take down the “À Vendre” signs on their houses.

Not only did the Liberals win the election, Marois lost her own seat. So after 33 days of grueling, ugly, dirty bullshit that our leaders called an election campaign, the Liberals walk away with a majority government. Out of the 125 seats in the National Assembly, the Liberals have 125, while the PQ end up with 30, Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) 22 (much better than anyone thought they would do) and Quebec Solidaire 3.

After all the horror stories about people not being allowed to vote I have to say, I was kind of worried about going to vote. I made sure I had my voting card and all my proper ID, saying to myself, “Don’t get upset with anyone; it’s your civic duty.” But it could not have gone smoother. The people at the voting station were courteous, friendly and very professional. I ran to the store got some snacks to watch the results and was ready for a Battle Royal! But lo and behold, it was flop. The polls closed at 8pm and by 8:30pm it was clear who the next Government would be.

There was a couple of questions left. Would the leaders all hold their ridings? Turns out three out of four did. Marois lost her riding of Charlevoix–Côte-de-Beaupré. She then stepped down as party leader. Great grinning Buddha, she took a pummeling last night. I have not seen a beating like that since the early Mike Tyson days. During her resignation speech she said she was “very proud” of the 18 months the PQ was in power. “You put your trust in me in so many occasions and you allowed me to serve for all these years,” she continued.

My big thing was “What about PKP?” Turns out Pierre Karl Peladeau won his riding of Saint-Jerome. There my friends is the next leader of the Parti Quebecois. I am calling it right now, and you can take that one to the bank.

The Globe and Mail’s headline this morning is “Election outcome is not Couillard’s win as much as Marois’s crushing defeat” and I have to agree with that. But regardless we wake up with a new Premier this morning, Philippe Couillard. “Tonight Quebec has won. All of Quebec has won by giving itself a stable government,” said Couillard during his victory speech. So after only 18 months of kicking the Liberals out for doing such a shitty job, they are back, with a Majority. Mr. Couillard, we have given you our trust, you get another kick at the can. Try not to fuck it up.
