Free Music in a Big New Venue
The Métropolis is getting a new name: MTELUS. This large sized concert hall is taking over the space of the Metropolis theatre. The new space has free wi-fi and improved visual and acoustic elements.
On Tuesday, to celebrate the opening, a free show was offered featuring Radio Radio, A Tribe CAlled Red, Marieme accompanied by Di Astronauts and Sabrina Sabotage, and a DJ set by KOKA (Karim Ouellet and King Abid).
The theatre has a rich history. It was first used as a skating rink in 1884. After just one year of people gliding on the ice, they began to glide on the stage as the building became a theatre. It continued to be used for productions until 1923 when it became a movie theatre, the Loew’s Court. From 1960-1961, it upgraded (or downgraded) into an adult movie theatre, known as Cinema Eros.
In 1987, it opened as a discotheque and a show bar, and took its name Métropolis. In 1997, it exclusively became a concert venue, and up until now has been used by many of the city’s festivals — Jazz Fest, M for Montreal, Just for Laughs, and others. Over 130,000 people attend the concerts in the space.
Our photographers and writers have reviewed many concerts in the space.
MTELUS is located at 55 St. Catherine E.
