Saturday 3rd of October was the third French Beat organized by Festival MEG Montreal (Montreal Electronique Groove) in collaboration with Sacem / Nightlife.ca and CISM 89,3 FM. MEG Montreal was founded in 1999 and during its 17 editions has received international and renowned DJs such as Richie Hawtin, Justice, Brodinski and Gesaffelstein, to name a few and has also given a chance to lesser-known and local DJs to present their work to both the Montreal scene and other countries (e.g. Martinique, Mexico and France).

The French Beat is an annual event organized by MEG and this year it was hosted by the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT). The event featured two French DJs and two Quebecer DJs.

H u G founder of On the Stick Records, opened the night at the SAT. Aged only 22, he is considered as the rising star of the Montreal’s electronic scene. His unique hybrid style is a hypnotic mix between trip-hop and environmental electro. H u G was followed by Superpoze who has emerged from Caen (France) in record time and whom it was his first stop in North America. His aerial music takes roots in French touch and elaborated melodies with hip hop influences and ambient. The 22 year old DJ said recently that he felt being part of a generation that puts melodies before the beat.

As the crowd became more compact especially in front of the DJ booth, Thylacine the French DJ made his appearance. The DJ begun by pulling out his MPC, and after a while his saxophone. Needless to say the crowd was in ecstasy. The artist has as influencers Massive Attack and Moderat. The audience was pleased to be part of this performance as they took a dive in a world of catchy yet emotional and enchanting electronic voyage. Accompanied by Laetitia Bely’s projections, the set ended on the known Sand.

Local DJ and producer Robert Robert ended the night. Having done the first part of Chet Faker’s show at the Belmont, this DJ has surely made himself a reputation in the local scene. His music mixes jazzy sounds, R&B plus electronic influences.

The French Beat was an unmissable and perfect electronic event to begin a new season at the SAT.
