Fringe Festival : Honesty Rents by the Hour Reviewed

Honesty rents by the Hour. From facebook. Honesty rents by the Hour. From facebook.

Honesty Rents by the Hour (by Michael Milech, dir. Matthew Jacobs) set the bar so high that I am almost afraid to see anything else at the Fringe. The tiny cramped set with its two doors was the essence of seedy motel, a place where, Danny played by Patrick Keeler told us, the truth always comes out. His performance was impeccable. As the cynical Jewish McGill student he gave a delightful performance and even when he sneered it was an honest sneer. Catherine Yale was wonderful as Chantal a suburban housewife looking for something more, and almost undone by her guilt.

Howard Rosenstein as Pinchus (a Hassidic man who can never let his family or community know about his sexual preferences) put the entire audience in his pocket and just walked off with us. His ambivalent but sexually driven Hassid was the engine of the show and it was brisk and ruthless.

The writing was humourous and provocative, and the direction was fresh and well thought out. Everything about this play was crisp and beautifully executed, down to the costumes, the lights, and the set. I recommend that you go and acquire tickets before it is sold out, and judging by tonight’s show it will be sold out very quickly.

Honesty Rents by the Hour is at the Rialto Theatre Studio (5723 du Parc).June 2,3,4,8,9,10,11,15,16,17,18. $10. Tickets can be purchased HERE.

This is the winning show at the Fringe. Great actors in a beautifully directed, soulfully written story.
