Hamza Mejri, fashion photographer and creator of Montreal’s Just for Him fashion event, can now add designer to his long list of accomplishments. On Friday, June 10, Mejri launched his collection with a fashion show at Salle Polyvalente.

Mejri's Bronze

A bright and open space, with large stained glass windows, the Salle Polyvalente was the perfect setting for Mejri’s classic yet innovative creations. The show was preceded by the designer’s latest photo exhibit, Abstract Fashion, featuring clothing from the collection. The models in the photos are the fluidity and elegance of Mejri’s collection personified. Followed up by a glass of wine, and some delicious hors-d’oeuvres, we were ready to start the show.

Mejri's Bronze

Mejri’s collection, for men and women, is inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s designs and photography. Bronze is luxurious and elegant: laces, leather and silks come together to create a rich simplicity. My personal favourite: a lace-top dress with a huge silk bow and full skirt. For men, lace shirts and leather details make for striking, unique pieces. A delicate greyscale floral print juxtaposes nicely with the black lace throughout the collection. Skirts with lace cut-outs in unexpected places surprised me. A model came down the runway in a leather midi skirt, two lace knee patches at the front: something I’ve never seen before, but that I found out I really liked. The way Mejri played with sheer and opaque fabrics was fresh and interesting.

Mejri’s collection was an impressive first foray into fashion design. I hope we’ll be seeing more from him soon! Missed the show? Take a peek at the collection here. Or shop it right here.
