It was date night for my husband and I this past Friday; we met up after a work at a restaurant called Deville Dinnerbar.

Deville Dinerbar out

Deville is hip and happening. It has great big windows overlooking the street with two floors filled with people, many of whom seemed much cooler than us. The soundwaves were bursting with loud music, most of which I could recognize because they had an 80’s theme going all night. I sat down at our table and felt immediately drawn to bop to the music. I ended up bopping all night.

My husband ordered the classic Deville burger (two beef patties – very masculine meal) and I had the veggie burger (I am a vegetarian — classic gender stereotypes?), and we both loved our meals. Mine was a bit too heavy on the Portobello mushroom side, but it was filled with delicious roasted veggies and it had lovely lentil and chickpea patties rather than the generic frozen veggie patties almost every restaurant resorts to. In other words, mine had real protein, which I appreciated deeply. We both polished our plates.

Halfway through the evening, I remembered my promise to write for Montreal Godzilla. The waiter came over to see if we needed anything and I burst out, “I just remembered that I am going to write about this dinner for a web magazine! I forgot to take a picture of my burger!” The waiter looked at me with wide eyes, and then I added, “Can I have a free dessert?”

The waiter laughed. I suppose that wasn’t the slickest way to handle the situation, but he got the manager and she seemed entertained by my amateur ways. She suggested their most popular dessert, the Big Easy Beignets, and we happily complied. She returned with a Chinese take-out box filled with deep fried “beignets”, accompanied by two dipping sauces: chocolate hazelnut mousse and caramel. They were… incredible! At first, we could not understand why they were presented in a takeout box, but after eating two each (actually, my husband ate three!), we were forced to concede defeat (either that, or undo the button on our jeans…). We closed up the box and took the rest home.

So the final statement of the hour: Deville Dinerbar is a lot of fun. The food was great, the music infinitely bopp-able, and the staff were divine. I would go back again and again! You should check it out. And ask for the 80’s mix if you are so inclined!
