I must admit I have been a long time admirer of Shantel’s Balkan electronic style, but haven’t had the chance to see his show back in 2012 at Istanbul. After the release of his album Disko Partizani in 2007 he has gained more popularity internationally. This Saturday night was a chance for Montrealers to listen to Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestar’s great performance for free. They got on the TD stage once at 9 p.m. and once at 11 p.m., each performance lasting an hour. Interestingly the two different time slots featured some different songs and very different atmospheres.

Honestly I thought their performance at 11 p.m. was much more energetic and interactive. Shantel even came down from the stage and sang Bella Ciao with the audience. Some other songs that were performed by the group last night include Disko Boy, Citizen of Planet Paprika, Disko Partizani, and Andante Levante.

Last night the audience had a chance to listen to Gypsy jazz in its finest form.
