Loving the Ladies with Made For Summer Band BESTiE

Within the first twenty seconds of watching BESTiE’s video, Pineapple, I knew this Vancouver based quartet were going to be interesting to say the least. It’s impossible to hate any four guys that have an obscene obsession with pineapples. Given that you like summer, sippin’ beverages and a combination of the genre’s indie-rock, ska and a hint of reggae, you are going to add BESTiE to your summer playlist. I got to chat with Tristan Orchard of BESTiE in a combination of three different phone calls due to awful reception as they were on the second day of touring and heading up to Calgary. It’s their first Canada-wide tour as a band and they’re awfully excited. With the purchase of a ravishing slightly soccer-mom-esque mini van, they will be driving into Montreal on May 8.

These Bestie’s made BESTiE come to life in the Spring of 2012. It was a hot summer night and Orchard was sauntering around the jam space he owns in Vancouver. His own band had been dissolving and he stumbled upon his future bandmates, Andrew Janczewski, Daniel Ruiz and Rob Cameron. He walked in, they jammed, and BESTiE was born. Their genre is unique; to me, it sounds like a combination of Indie-Rock, a touch of ska and definitely has a surfer vibe. Orchard agreed, but added that there’s an influence of Reggae, African music from Andrewm and definitely Colombian roots from Daniel’s musical upbringing. The entire album No Bad Days is really fun and quirky. For a day of sun-tanning, drinking Poppers, or to get you out of your own personal blues… it’s exactly the easy-listening, fun music the doctor ordered.

These four boys LOVE, and I mean LOVE, their ladies. The tracks in this album include, Allison I’ll Listen, Fell in Love with a Stripper and Kelli Kapowski. The stripper is a figment of the imagination, Allison is a classic ex girlfriend ballad but Kelli is the real-deal. Tristan fell for this lady, and he fell hard. She inspired the song Pineapple as the band wanted to make a slightly stupid song. This pineapple is a tongue-and-cheek representation of new, tangy sweet love. (He gets several points for corny-ness). Kelli also inspired Foolish Hearts and of course the track Kelli Kapowski.

BESTiE’s song Pineapple has been a big hit, with radio air play, making it to #25 on HypeMachine and winning first in a 2013 Peak Performance Contest. They were awarded $50,000 as the grand prize!! Which is any new band’s dream. The song was also featured on MTV’s teen drama series Awkward. Continually receiving great feedback on music blog’s on the cities they visit and all kinds of interviews, BESTiE is a project built for success.

With their full album recently launched, this is the first time they are charging for their music. They have an ongoing promotion; if you instagram or tweet the band a picture of your ticket with #nobaddaystour, you can win yourself a mighty fine three free tracks from No Bad Days.

Orchard’s made it to Montreal five times prior. He loves the poutine, smoked meat, museums and of course all of our amazingly dressed babes. If you make it out to the show, BESTiE promises you lots dancing and a great night.

BESTiE plays with Oh No, Yoko and Vasts in Montreal at the L’Esco (4467 St. Denis) on May 8. 9:30 p.m. $8.
