My Montreal Bucket List: Thali Cuisine Indienne

Sometimes the best places can be found in the most unlikely places and I really love these discoveries. A couple of months ago I was out with a friend and as we wandered down one of the side streets to St Catherine’s, she casually pointed out a small Indian restaurant. The place was casual. It had a white sign with red writing. I didn’t think I whole lot about it until she said, “this place does the best Indian food!” So I locked that thought away in my mind as something I wanted to try at a later date.

As I wandered downtown earlier this week and thought about places to stop for a lunch break, I remembered this little unassuming Indian restaurant and decided to attempt rediscovering it. Happily, I stumbled my way to its door. And how thankful I was to do so.

Thali Cuisine Indienne is on St Marc street downtown. Its simple, easy and the food is traditional and delicious. For what I would consider an extremely reasonable price, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed a delicious Indian feast!

There are plenty of options. Sitting in the bain-marie, you can see all the deliciously spiced options available. We decided on the traditional plate. For $8.50 (vegetarian) or $9.50 (meat) you choose three curry options served with rice, salad, naan bread and a spiced papadam. The lamb curry was so tender, the meat simply fell away from the bone. I also had the Chana Masala (chickpea curry) which had a nice kick! And the potato and eggplant dish was a great vegetarian side. Everything was delicious!

The meal was huge! So there certainly wasn’t any room for another bite more however the curry samosas looked delicious also! Next time, perhaps…

Thali Cuisine Indienne is located at 1409 St Marc Street (corner St Catherine west). It is open Monday to Saturday from 11.30am to 10pm for dine in or take away.
