NDG Arts Week Not Blown Over

NDG Arts Week 2017 NDG Arts Week 2017

Despite a massive storm that ripped up trees and blocked roads, NDG Art Week is making-do to continue to hold as many events as possible. Some have moved indoors, while others are being moved to new locations.

The annual festival, now in its eighth year, includes all forms of arts.
A few of the key events to catch are Tionnhehkwen: Seeds of Life. This event asks everyone to bring an object that “speaks to what nourishes them” to be woven into a dress. The six dresses from previous events are on display (Aug 24; Métèque Art Gallery, 5442 Ch. de la Côte St Luc). While there, check out Kali Spitzer’s Exploring Resilience, a photography exhibition that includes pictures of indigenous and mixed-heritage people intended to address questions of race, gender, and sexuality (5442 Ch. de la Cote St Luc until Sept 1). On Friday, the arts continue. Circus arts are on offer with Aweye Manon’s Cirque le Gros Orteil. She promises to tell a story of a woman who unwittingly becomes a circus performer who must “seduce” a strong man from the audience (Aug 25, shows at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. in Trenholme Park). Music fills Trenholme park with Ms. Holmes, Clay and Friends, and the Damn Truth (Aug 25, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.). Among the events taking place are the annual screening of short films, called NDG Off the Wall, now happening in Trenholme Park (Aug 25, 8-10 p.m.). The Biergarten where one can discuss the art scene over a cold one has been moved to 2424 Park Row East (Aug 25).

On Saturday, don’t miss out on the annual Art Walk, which leads a lucky crowd along SHerbrooke from Hampton to Harvard (Aug 26, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., free). Musical acts will be performing as well. The day ends with Samedi in the Park with The Damn Truth, Clay and Friends, and Ms. Holmes at Trenholme Park (6 p.m. – 10 p.m.).

Events on Sunday August 27 include the Fête Interculturelle at Parc Benny from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Food, dress, music, games, and dances from places as diverse as Syria, China, Djibouti, and Maghreb are featured. End the day with Sunset on Somerled as Eleuthra, Strange Froots, Bayou St. Laurent, and Voodoo Jazz perform at the Corner of Prince-of-Wales and Somerled, starting at 4 p.m.
