I had the opportunity to visit Mademoiselle Clifford’s Flower Emporium and English Tea Room for the second time this past weekend. I went for High Tea for my mom’s birthday, with my mom, sister and four year old niece.

From the moment you walk in, you know you’re somewhere special. With a wall of tea cups and saucers, teapots in all shapes and forms, and loose teas galore, this is a tea lover and connoisseur’s paradise. Mlle Clifford herself greets you with her delightful Scottish accent. Like you might pair a fine wine with your dinner, she suggests a selection of teas to savour with your Tea (meal).

The staff were so sweet to my niece, having prepared her own little tower of finger sandwiches and scones as well as her own teapot with apple juice inside. She was tickled pink to be able to drink tea with us and very quickly demonstrated a rather refined sipping technique.

The food, oh the food. So fresh, so delicious. I don’t know what I would do if I had to choose between the cucumber and Coronation Chicken sandwiches. Not to mention the melt-in-your-mouth homemade scones with jam and Devon double cream. I’m smacking my lips just thinking about those again. I would be remiss if I forgot to mention the rich, fudgy, gooey chocolate cake that will make you lick your fingers. Yes, even if you’ve used a fork because there is no question you’ll want to clean your plate.

What about the tea? you ask. I chose the Kyoto Rose, a green tea with cherry and rose petals. It was light and mildly sweet. Very satisfying with all the flavours on our tiered stand of goodies. I bought a small bag of it to enjoy at home. Prefer a black tea? Maybe white? Herbal? No problem, they boast a selection of over 90 teas! Yes, you can get coffee, too.

Bottom line folks, for a cozy, welcoming and delicious tea experience, get yourself to Hudson to Mlle Clifford’s!
