The annual music festival that best encapsulates the “for the people, by the people” spirit is the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival. From June 1 to June 24, 11 different venues are hosting music (of course), workshops, a poster art expo, and lectures. The performers represent some of the most innovative and avant garde independent performers from both the local and international scenes. In other words, expect to see performers who specialize in post-punk, ambient, experimental and lo fi. Most shows clock in under $15, and many under $10, making this wallet friendly and an opportunity to encounter new types of music.

A few highlights include Saltland, the solo project of Silver Mt. Zion member Rebecca Foon. She’ll be sharing the stage with Geneviève Heistek, who sound pedals her viola into a sonic mass (June 1, Casa del Popolo, $10/13). Peter Brötzmann and Heather Leigh will be pairing for a night of improvised free jazz, with experimental saxophone skronk from Nyon as an opener (June 6, La Sala Rossa, $25/28). Ah-Mer-Ah-Su (Star Amerasu) very much represents the spirit of the festival, as a queer black trans woman and interdisciplinary artist who performs pop. She’ll be joined by Jasmine Infiniti and Lonely Boa (June 13, Casa del Popolo, $10). It’s been awhile since Panopticon Eyelids has performed, but they’ll be reunited with Steve Godin for their experimental punk psychedelic styling (June 18, Casa del Popolo, $8/10). Check out the improvisational jazz of Perch Hen Brok and Rain, two Dutch jazz musicians who come together with two from New York (June 21, La Sala Rossa, $15/18).
