Montreal’s Old Port has always been enjoyable in the summer but add tacos, margaritas, and a couple bottles of wine and it’s a party.

Muvbox took advantage of the hot summer day and held a party for Taco Box on August 18 offering samples of their tacos, wine, freshly prepared fruit juice and delicious margaritas.

“We tried five times to have this event,” said the owner of Muvbox Daniel Noiseux, “But the weather in Montreal can be unpredictable.”

Organizers had a DJ spinning house music with enough bass to ensure the tiny tropically decorated shipping container was not missed. With the event starting at 5:30 p.m., it made for the perfect happy hour atmosphere.

Guests were greeted with drinks, corn chips, and salsa before sitting down to a bottle of rosé or sauvignon blanc. Friendly waitresses then came around the park bench dining area to serve a selection of tacos including lobster, duck, and chorizo.

“It’s a twist on street food but we want to take street food to another level,” said Noiseux.

He said he didn’t want to stick with conventional tacos and the vegetarian taco was the perfect example marrying Indian and Mexican cuisine with chickpeas, curry, and a sauce to tie it all together. As for the lobster taco, while it tasted great to some, I’d suggest going next door to the sister container selling lobster rolls.

Organizer of the event, Anne Dongois, said all the ingredients used in the tacos are provided locally like their lobster from Gaspe. Noiseux said even their gluten free corn chips are baked in Chef Julio Guajardo’s friend’s kitchen.

While the guacamole was lacking some flavour, the salsas had an authentic Mexican influence with Chef Julio’s personal interpretation on the traditional sauce.

For those not at the event, Taco Box is located in Old Montreal’s Place du Génie and is expected to be open until early- to mid-autumn. The prices are reasonable with two tacos, chips, salsa, and a drink for $10.
