Win Tickets to See Sapienta at the Mainline Theatre

The first known woman playwright, Hroswitha of Gandersheim, didn’t stick to simple subjects. She went right for what was the key issue of her day (the 10th century Europe) — Christianity vs. Roman polytheism and violence against women. Sapientia, a Christian, comes to Rome, and faces off against the Emperor Hadrian who insists that she worship the pagan gods or her daughters, Faith, Hope, and Charity, will be tortured. Comedy and violence ensue. Alison Darcy, Robert Leveroos, Alexandra Petrachuk and Paul Van Dyck bring everyday objects to life to tell the tale.

The show runs from August 16 to 26, and many nights feature post-show talkbacks (August 17, 19, 23, and 24) to address the graphic subject matter, the type of puppetry (object theatre), historical analysis of the show, as well as the playwright herself.
