Under the Snow Festival Silently Drifts In
While the snow plows outside are busy moving the last of the most recent snowfall, Montreal, city of festivals, hosts a small but mighty indie music festival Under the Snow. The yearly event showcases generally new, independent musicians and ends with a “salon” — really a bazaar — of underground arts and music (Salon du disques et des arts underground) at Église St. Denis.
The shows kick off tonight at Casa del Popolo and continue into tomorrow.
Tonight, you can catch Carnior and Dye By The Sword. Think psychedelic post-rock, with dreamy, electronic journeys, as well as fuzzy distortion sound walls. (Kiss Me Sunset, the third band listed, isn’t playing).
On Friday, Millimetrik, Tracer Flare, and The City Gates occupy the same space. Millimetrik aka Pascal Asselin is a Quebec beatmaker and repeatedly is recognized for his electronic ambient and trap albums. Tracer Flare goes for a fuller, rockier sound with layered tracks and forward momentum on their album Sigh of Relief (free download too). City Gates is shoegaze, fuzz, twanging grief and melancholy indie pop with some nice reverb-y drums that make their album Collapse sound grand.
