NXNE 2015 Recap
NXNE has come and gone for 2015. Many artists filled venues across downtown Toronto last week, and I was lucky enough to check out several shows. What was especially cool about NXNE was the great organization they had and the command of Younge and Dundas Square.
On Thursday, I headed to #paper100 – Paper Bag Records’ 100th release party. Here, I was able to see great acts such as Nils of Rural Alberta Advantage, DIANA, Woodlands among others at Lee’s Palace. A nice venue on Bloor St, there is a sunken dance floor and a good amount of seating. The mixture of artists made for an interesting night as the music switched from folky to interesting synth pop; the fairly priced beverages and the mulling around of artists really made it a unique night.
By the time Saturday rolled around, I decided to hit up the Younge and Dundas stage. Toronto has no Quartier des Spectacles, but NXNE did a great job of setting up this stage downtown. As the sun began to sink behind the skyscrapers, Best Coast hit the stage and played well. It’s always great to see a lady rocking out on stage, and it was pretty good.
The New Pornographers really stole the program though, they had great banter and played well. It was definitely a great atmosphere and evening.
All together, NXNE was pretty great. It was well staffed and well organized. It really taught me to love Toronto a bit more and I really enjoyed some of the artists I was able to catch. I would definitely consider going again in future years.
