Arts this week features film screenings, talks and tons of great vernissages to see.
Délicat Pulse & Picture Transition (Display Camera) Picture Transition (Unfixed Form), vernissage
Fonderie Darling, September 22 from 5 to 10 PM
The Darling Foundry opens its 2016 fall season, with Délicat Pulse by Julie Favreau (curator: Marie Frampier) in the main gallery, and Picture Transition (Display Camera) Picture Transition (Unfixed Form) by Sarah Greig in the small gallery. Favreau and Greig are both Montreal-based artists. Their exhibits are the products of their residencies at Darling Foundry from 2013 to 2016. They’ll also be celebrating the launch of Bosquet Magazine’s 4th edition, “Obscure”, and for the launch of Espace art actuel – pratiques et perspectives 114th edition (issue : FACES). Enjoy food from Cholo 58, and music from DJ Oxyde de chrome while you’re there! There will be a guided tour for members at 5 PM. The show is on until November 27.
Mapplethorpe, conference
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, September 22 from 7 to 8:30 PM
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is currently exhibiting the work of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century: Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) in Focus: Perfection. As part of this programming, Judith Benhamou-Huet, French journalist, curator and author, will be holding a conference as part of Les Belles Soirées. Tickets are $12 for students, or $20 for general admission. You can buy them online here. Don’t forget to check out the exhibit, on until January 22!
Indigeneity in the Media, Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Room S1-3, Stewart Biology Building, September 22 from 7 to 9 PM
McGill’s Indigenous Student Alliance will be hosting a screening and panel discussion of the film Smoke Signals. Join the panelists in a discussion on native identity, Indigenous peoples and cultures on the big screen. Check out the film trailer here.
BLACK FEM’Art, vernissage
Espace Mushagalusa, September 23 from 6 to 9 PM
The BLACK FEM’Art exhibition highlights the work of 10 young Black Women from Montreal for the 12th edition of Black Film Festival Montreal. Featuring work by: D. Mathieu Cassendo, Fitabella, Géraldine Entiope, Khaci Jay, Keithy Antoine, Keish’art, Leon’art, Maliciouz, Neetzy l’artiste, and Shanna Strauss. Enjoy a free night of art and music by DJ Sweet La Rock. There will also be spoken words performance be Sara Sheline, Shanice Nicole, Farah Devalon, and Rayana Speede.
Arts Alive! West Island, festival
John Rennie High School, September 24 from 10:30 AM to 10 PM
Enjoy a day-long celebration of local arts and culture in the West Island! Workshops, an art exhibition, delicious food, and a high-energy evening concert – there’s something for everyone. Check out the schedule here. You’ll need to buy tickets for some events, but most are free. Something for everyone! This is the last Arts Alive! event of the summer, so stop by if you can.
Mythes futuristes, Futurist Myths, vernissage
Cinéma VA (VA-114), September 24 from 5 to 7 PM
Writer and curator Nasrin Himada presents Futurist Myths, a screening of videos that “find in fabulation the political potential for other futures.” Featuring works by Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Noor Abed, Kristin Li, Dylan Mira, Cauleen Smith and Malena Szlam. The screening will be followed by a conversation with artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy. Free admission!
