Alt-Country Oz Style : Marta Pacek Interview
In time for the release of her new album, and after receiving rave reviews across Australia, Australian alternative folk artist Marta Pacek has arrived in Canada! Touring with her new album, Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms, Pacek is due to perform in Montreal.
Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms was released in Canada on April 29th. Described by many Australian critics as “alt-country” the album has taken fans by storm. Receiving raving reviews from both Australian and Canadian media, this is not a gig to be missed!
This album differs from Pacek’s usual country style. Working with producer Brad Alberta, the team plays with more electric sounds and sonic beats. Pacek and Albetta have beautifully created an album of smooth sounds introducing more bass playing and strong drum beats. “I didn’t want to make the same album, I wanted to stretch and change the style,” Pacek said.

She pushed the boundaries she was used to, and says working with Albetta was a great and eccentric experience. Although there was some uncertainty in the beginning, Pacek says as she could see the layering of instrumental sounds merge and as the music began to come together, the process grew on her. In the end, she loved the outcome.
The latest album as has elements of “alternative, moody, playful, cheeky, rootsy, country and contemporary.” It’s an album of smooth sounds which beautifully mellow to create a cool-country vibe. And I agree, you can’t help but fall in love with the enticing sounds of Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms.
Marta Pacek will be performing at one of her favourite venues in Montreal: Casa de Popolo. “I am travelling with a fantastic guitarist, and seeing the songs performed close to how they were created, in an intimate show, is a beautiful thing because this really is how the music comes together,” Pacek said.
Marta Pacek was born just outside of Canberra, Australia. She has been writing and performing music with various Australian and international artists over recent years. She as been recognised for her talents and received a number of music awards such as “Best International Artist” in 2009 and “Best Alternative-Country Song” in 2011. Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms is her third full length album and since its release, it has been praised.
Marta Pacek will perform with Tofu Stravinsky at Casa de Popolo (4873 St Laurent) on May 25th at 8.30pm. $10.
