Mile End store of all art ecclectic Monastiraki is paradise for browsers and treasure hunters. It’s an antique store, a gallery, and something of a paper creation repository. Every trip inside yields new delights ranging from a well-loved paperback that travelled to Helsinki to a one-of-a-kind replica of the entire 1981 Ralph Lauren collection but in Barbie size to wonderful prints and paintings by store owners Billy Mavreas, Emilie O’Brien and any of the artists they feature. Zines, collage, art exhibits. The entire place buzzes with life. The store has been sprinkling the Mile End district with its arty fairy dust for 16 years. Here’s Michael Bakouch’s polaroid touched photo journal of the sweet 16 party that took place on Sunday August 17.

 

Monastiraki is located at 5478 St. Laurent. Hours are Wednesday 12-6 p.m., Thursday and Friday 12-8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 12 – 5 p.m.
