Prophétique (on est déjà né·es) Review

Dancers washing the hair of another Nadia Beugré - Prophétique (on est déjà né.es)

‘Welcome to Abidjan! In this bustling metropolis, trans people oscillate between secrecy and overexposure. During the day, they work in hair and beauty salons. At night, they ignite the scene with sensuality and humour.

Majestic and subtly provocative, stranded and oppressed, the divas of Prophétique move from care to discourse, from the intimate to the political, and express this volcanic double life with cut-and-shift and voguing.

Founded in Montpellier in December 2020 by Nadia Beugré, Libr’Arts proposes spaces for reflection, creation, sharing and experimentation, wandering between Montpellier, Abidjan and the rest of the world.

Since her resounding appearance at FTA 2022 with L’homme rare, Nadia Beugré has become increasingly involved in Abidjan, her hometown, where she created her last two pieces: Filles-Pétroles and Prophétique (on est déjà né·es).

In Prophétique (on est déjà né·es), Nadia Beugré invites us to a meeting with a beautiful gang of performers: Beyoncé, Canel, Jhaya Caupenne, Taylor Dea, Acauã Shereya El Bandide, and Kevin Kero. Each one of them is an artist in their own authentic way and come form a marginalized back ground.

Nadia Beugré takes a deep interest in the marginalized sections of society. In returning to her native city, the choreographer made contact with members of Abidjan’s trans feminine community.

Int he show are witnesses their fight against the painful hypocrisy they suffer and their desire to have a breath of freedom and hope. The six Ivorian, Brazilian, and Belgian performers, each one a beautiful and engaging dancer, expose their reality to us with courage and vulnerability, and without disguise or detour.

Prophétique is therefore a powerful, moving, and sometimes very funny creation. It is as if we are invited to a party where the pleasure of the performers is contagious and where the freedom of their bodies breaks the limits of what is conventional. It allows us to share in this freedom, and to plunge into a daring and exotic universe.

In perpetual transition, the six wonderful performers become the spokespersons for their combats and the bodies of their dances. They tell the story of prophetic existences which invite us to witness their battle against injustice, exclusion, and violence.

A must see!

Prophétique is part of the FTA and runs until May 30. Tickets available HERE.
