When Circus and Performance Become Dance

What a lovely evening at Tangente with two extrordinary choreographies!

Before a short pause the audience was warmed up with a short piece:  Théâtre Fille Unique – La rencontre (10 minutes) in which we were invited to step into a strange world that might resemble paradise, but not quite!

La rencontre addresses existential themes like boredom, loneliness, the need for community, recognition, and self-love. Marie Reid and Melania Maria Balmaceda Venegas deliver a choreography and interpretation that is playful and humorous, leaving the audience in awe. Both performers challenged each other in this senseless space, sometimes trying to find solace in each other and sometimes seeking the force to escape. The “other” representing to be the solution and a comfort, but as well an obstacle, or even the enemy. Julianne LeBel’s set and costumes are nothing short of stunning!  The performance created a universe where the audience sees themselves reflected in a playful, strange world.

The Chita Project – “La chose-en-soi” (45 minutes)

Pablo Pramparo and Anna Kichtchenko are mesmerizing, playing with danger, timing, and a crazy-fuelled energy in their sublime choreography La chose-en-soi. Their performance resonated long after the presentation. In a DIY scenography made from everyday objects, the two performers create a space for themselves, the materialization of their internal landscape. The audience is invited to get lost in the maneuvers and experiments of “La chose-en-soi.”

This “thing-in-itself” could be a boxing ring, a playground, a basement, or a gas station in the middle of nowhere. Two performers are moving in unison and then become competition for each other, fighting and wrestling each other and testing each others limits with an enormous energy and bravery.

Their bodies overflow with a raw energy and invite deep desires: to play, to mingle with another, a thirst for intimacy, either that is expressed in a fight and struggle or in a rest, breathing heavily and sharing simple moments in unison.

This physical language brings vulnerability, intimacy, and tension that emerge from dynamic positions and ongoing movements. The sound, light, and textures interact with the physical movement, thus generating a unique feeling of transparency and intimacy between these fabulous artists, the performance space of Tangente, and us, the audience who surrounds them. Paul Chambers lighting design added an electrifying layer of purpose to this unique dance piece.

This evening was excellent and all  performers brought a unique blend of physicality, creativity, and emotional depth to their work, making this evening a captivating experience!

Don’t miss this extraordinary blend of circus, performance, and dance that will leave you speechless!
