In the past few centuries, witchcraft has taken a myriad of forms and connotations. This season, from now till April 6th, 2025, the Pointe à Callière museum will host the Witches – Out of the Shadows exhibition. Embark on a bewitching journey that weaves myth and history to create an immersive and captivating guide to witchcraft throughout history.

The exhibition covers the history of witchcraft from Europe all the way to the States and the grounds on which Montréal is built on. The path is paved with beautiful artifacts and historical scriptures, including essays against witchcraft, trial transcriptions, as well as the very books that served as a basis for the accusations that fuelled the horrific witch hunts for centuries.

They cover classics such as the Salem witch trials, as well as multiple local historical figures accused of witchcraft, including famous urban legend: la Corriveau. The exhibition contains a second part, which exhibits modern artifacts associated with modern witchcraft, as well as an introduction to Wicca. It ends with a splendid exhibit of dresses worn by iconic on-screen witches from movies and series like The Witcher and The School for Good and Evil. As a Broadway fan, I was delighted to find the very dress that Sophia Anne Caruso (original Beetlejuice Lydia Deetz) wore on set.

This exhibition is a wonderful and empowering opportunity to discover witchcraft and its history in a new light. Its immersive and mystical nature is sure to make you linger. While you’re at it, don’t forget to check out all the wonderful permanent exhibitions that the museum has to offer.
