Laundry of Legends II Laundry of Legends II

Death poetry becomes dance in this multi-discipline performance. Performed in English, French, Arabic, and Swedish, the dancers begin to move to a series of poems that make death their focus. It can vary to facing death, avoiding death, or even dealing with death. According to Hindi, “These particular texts become oracle making, death fueled time-machines when they are transformed by dancing bodies. Death poems emerge when there is a gathering. They start in the body, and reassemble themselves within us in fragments.”

In particular, the central poem is the arab apocalypse by Etel Adnan. Other poems include those by Aase Berg, Kaveh Akbar, and CA Conrad.

This world premiering work is brought to the MAI by choreographer and conceptual artist Jassim Hindi and danced by Clara Furey, Simon Portigal & Justin de Luna. Hindi is the 2022 – 23 artist in residence at the MAI.

Hindi is an artist living in Norway, born to Lebanese and French parents. He has created a number of award winning works that blur lines between arts disciplines as well as make use of unusual spaces. In his bio, Hindi describes how he creates works that are created out of nervousness and necessity, using broken stories, objects, and sounds meshed together in a pluri-idiomatic manner. He specifically statest that, “There should always be something I’m missing in my practice.”
