My Montreal Bucketlist: Visiting the Bank of Montreal Museum
This might seem like an odd Bucket List adventure, but I decided to take a visit to the original Bank of Montreal. Fascinated by the building, and I knew there was a small museum inside, I thought perhaps it would be worth the visit. And it certainly was!
Located in Montreal’s Old Port, the Bank of Montreal is a proud old building. Standing tall at Place D’Armes, the building is located opposite the Notre Dame Basilica. Still in use, the building is a modern BMO however still has that beautiful old style which we hope it will never lose.
Founded in 1817, it is the oldest banking institution across Canada. A front entrance that dates back to 1847, the building was later redesigned in 1905. Attached to the side, is the more modern part of the Bank of Montreal which was more recently built in 1959.
Inside there are many beautiful things to see. The museum itself is located in the more modern part of the building. It is small but interesting. It presents original bank notes, mechanical money savers, historical documents and the history of the museum and banking in Montreal and Canada.
But before you even have the chance to reach the museum room which is to the left of the main entrance, you will be captured by the beauty of the old building itself. A grand entrance that draws you in, the huge pillars and highly decorated ceiling are a truly beautiful architectural sight to see. And at this time of the year, the Christmas lights just make it even more magical!
The Bank of Montreal is located at 129 Saint-Jaques, Montreal. The Bank of Montreal Museum is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Entrance is free.
