One festival ends and another begins, this month in Montreal’s art scene. Catch Art Souterrain before it disappears until 2017, but brace yourselves for Art Matters’ 2016 edition starting tonight! Other things on the agenda include interesting explorations of space and the role of the viewer. Check out what’s happening this week in Montreal:

Art Souterrain, exhibit

Montreal’s underground, until March 20

For those of you who missed Nuit Blanche, don’t fret: the underground art paths are still up and running until March 20. Take a look at their underground paths here, and their satellite paths here. This year’s theme is: must art be appealing?, questioning the importance of aestheticism, object and experience. Don’t miss out, it’s right out the metro anyway! You can also get audioguides for most circuits.

Art Matters, festival

Various locations, March 7 to 26

The annual Art Matters festival is back with a fresh batch of exhibits and speaker series. The festival is made up of eight exhibitions at various galleries in Montreal (including Galerie Espace, the VAV, Studio XX and Z Art Space) and three speaker series on “Community Engagement and
Accessibility in the Arts”, ” Actively Claiming Space within a Music Scene” and “Critical Trolling. Check out their full catalog online, right here.

Contextual Furnishings, vernissage

Diagonale, March 10 at 6 PM

Tim Messeiller’s solo show brings together tables, and shelves – made of wood, rope or cloth – within a model home. Messeiller invites viewers into a space that is familiar, yet unusual. His work questions audience initiative, agency and participation within the gallery space. You can also watch a video on the piece here.

Un moment donné (entre la galerie et la maison), vernissage

Joyce Yahouda Gallery, March 12 from 4 to 6 PM

Massimo Guerrera invites you to an intimate viewing of his solo show at the Joyce Yahouda Gallery and his studio. Seriously, you can call to make an appointment: 514-875-2323, with a maximum of three people per viewing. Guerrera is available Tuesdays at 12, 1:30 and 3 at the Gallery, as well as at the same times on Thursdays in his studio. The show runs until April 30.
