Review: A Dive into the Intimate

dancers at a table Sans Toi[T] de Janie et Marcio

Cinquième Salle | Place des Arts | September 10

Last night, the Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts transformed into a jewel box for three intense and intimate performances. Emerging Montreal artists invited us to share their unique worlds, oscillating between introspection and the search for meaning.

Amara Barner: A Cathartic Ritual

I was immediately captivated by Amara Barner’s solo, I Ceremony for the Echoes of Chaos. The dancer, with a magnetic presence, took us on an initiatory journey. Through powerful and delicate movements she explored the depths of the soul, confronting inner and outer chaos. Each gesture seemed like a prayer, an attempt to find balance in a constantly changing world.

Leah Hamel and Sophie Qin: An Enchanting Duo

Almost There by Leah Hamel and Sophie Qin transported me to a dreamlike universe. The dancer and musician, in constant metamorphosis, created a perfect symbiosis between body and sound. This piece, both fragile and powerful, evoked the doubts and hopes that animate us when we are on the brink of a new chapter. The cello music still resonates!

Janie & Marcio: One Table, Eight Dancers, Infinite Relationships

The Montreal premiere of Sans toi[T] left me speechless. The duo Janie & Marcio, winners of the RÉVOLUTION prize in 2019, offered us a bold and touching creation. Around a simple table, eight dancers wove complex relationships, exploring the nuances of love, friendship, and solitude. The energy emanating from the performers was palpable, creating an atmosphere both intimate and universal.

In Summary

This evening was a true revelation. These three performances, as different as they were, shared a moving sincerity and authenticity. Montreal artists once again demonstrated their talent and ability to move us. I left with a full heart and an open mind, ready to explore other artistic horizons, who are part of this wonderful festival!

Quartiers de Danses takes place until September 14. Info HERE.
