Exploring Souk @ SAT!
“Souk” by definition is an Arabic word that means a marketplace or bazaar. A word that perhaps captures a sense of artistic unknown and creativity within itself. And for Montrealers, we hope the word Souk brings the idea of up-market and local artistic design to mind!
This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Souk at the SAT. A hand-craft and local market held at Société Des Arts Technologiques, it is a weekend of wonderful goodies perfect to treat yourself and those you love. And perfect timing for the holiday season!
Once again, the market is set to be a great success and as greatly loved as all previous years. Already underway, opening day was a sure hit with a bustling market place on Thursday. The room was filled with artists, their works and plenty of guests admiring the creations. I know I certainly was!
There is something magical about hand-crafted market places. They always possess that genuine feeing of love, creativity and craftsmanship that we just don’t feel in stores. Something that should be celebrated all year around, but is especially loved during the holiday season. And this is one of the reasons why Souk @ SAT is a must-do this weekend in Montreal.
Open to the public From Thursday November 29 to Sunday December 30, Souk @ SAT is a work of art within itself. The entire environment is so warmly welcoming that you are lured from the wintery streets. Low to the ground, the artists tables are filled with all kinds of arts from children’s to adult clothing, jewelry, leather goods, artwork, books, home accessories and even a little coffee and chocolate to keep you going! We interviewed and tested some of the goods for sale. Check out Carriage 44, Tonic 3/4 and Bals Preserves, as well as our article on things you can purchase for the “men” in your life.
What is Souk’s mission, you may ask? Well, it is to enhance the value of creativity and quality within Montreal design and to allow the opportunity to showcase the works of local artists. The Souk hopes to provide a space for different genres, budgets, tastes and needs for the artists and customers alike.
This year will be an extra special edition because Souk is celebrating the work and life of Montreal’s much loved and greatly missed Jane Heller who lost her battle to Cancer earlier this year. “Jane paid tribute to Montreal. It is or us this year to pay tribute to her work, her talent and the legacy she left us,” Creative Director and Founder of Souk, Azamit said.
With beautiful products for yourself, your friends, kids, home and lovers, there is no reason not to visit this beautiful marketplace sometime over this weekend. Happy shopping!
Souk @ SAT (1201 ST Laurent) is held from November 27 to 30. It is open Thursday and Friday, 12 to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 12 to 7pm. Entrance is free.
