Based on Charlie Huston’s 2004 crime novel, Caught Stealing was adapted for the screen by Huston himself and directed by Darren Aronofsky. The film stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson, with Zoë Kravitz, Bad Bunny, and Matt Smith (yes, the guy from Doctor Who) in supporting roles.
The story begins with what seems like a harmless favor: Hank agrees to watch his neighbor’s cat. But in true New York fashion, nothing stays simple for long. That small act throws him into a whirlwind of shady gangsters, violent encounters, and worst of all, having to face his own past. Talk about cat sitting gone bad, whew!
One of the most surprisingly touching aspects of the film is watching Hank go from a reluctant cat-sitter to someone willing to risk it all to save the little furball. Honestly, the cat might just be the real star of the movie, and maybe even Hank’s true love interest.
The movie strikes a near-perfect balance between crime and comedy. It keeps you on the edge of your seat while effortlessly jumping from tense, serious moments to laugh-out-loud absurdity. Just when you think you know how the plot will unfold, it surprises you with twists you never saw coming.
Now, the ending? Underwhelming. Do not expect Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz to be sipping cocktails on a tropical beach anytime soon. But the real strength of Caught Stealing isn’t in how it ends but in Hank’s journey. The film is all about facing your problems, acknowledging your truth, and owning up to your mistakes. When you have people coming at you from every direction, there is no running – Hank has to turn inward.
Fair warning: at times it is graphic. If the sight of open wounds and blood makes you queasy, maybe keep the blanket handy. But if you can handle it, Caught Stealing is a wild, unpredictable ride, funny, dark, and surprisingly heartfelt, all thanks to a tiny cat that somehow ruins, and saves, Hank’s entire life. Can not tell if the writer is a cat person or not…
