Attention comedy lovers: your Tuesday nights just got craftier. Montreal’s comedy collective “The Brunch Club” recently launched a weekly event called “Arts and Laughs”, which takes place at Comedyworks. The premise is simple: it’s basically the arts and crafts night at the local pub you know and love, except with fabulous comedians doing material about their creations. There are drink specials, a chance to win some boozy prizes and, best of all, free popcorn! It’s fair to say that for the low entrance fee of $5, this sounds extremely promising. I personally attended the event on Tuesday October 27th, and I can honestly say that it was a blast and is most definitely worth the price.

The show started off with host Jacob Greco presenting his own art (the craft theme that night was Halloween). Greco made the audience exceptionally comfortable and at home. In fact, that was one of the many things I thought was excellent about the setting; the venue feels as though you are sitting in a friend’s basement with your close buddies. There was an intimacy felt throughout the show and it was hard to believe that the other audience members were complete strangers to me.

Overall, I was truly impressed with the comedy acts and I especially loved Tranna Wintour. It was my first time seeing her and I thought she was a natural. In a sarcastic, humoristic way she talked about herself, her favorite divas and her art (a Barbie undergoing plastic surgery).

Eddy King was also on the roster that night. The well-known French humorist performed in English and sounded surprisingly fluent. Showing us pictures of his witty two year old and telling us personal anecdotes, he knew how to make a home out of the stage. In all honesty, his act overall was great but a few of his jokes regarding gender were a bit stereotypical and almost cringe-worthy. I take into consideration that it was only humor and he wanted to pump up the audience but I thought that stereotyping lesbians as “manly” was a little over the edge. Nonetheless, I loved hearing about his family and his daughter.

By 9 p.m. the show was over and my companion and I left with a smile. It was a great night and a good, lighthearted way to start off a new week. Not many performances like that are to be found for such low price. This is a no brainer for me: If you have free time on Tuesdays around 8 p.m. go to Comedyworks for Arts and Laughs.

Arts and Laughs takes place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Comedyworks (1238 Bishop). Doors are at 7 p.m., the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5. For more information, check out their website HERE.
