Worth the Trip: WHERE YOU ARE
Hudson Village Theatre
Yes it is a long schlep to the Hudson Village Theatre, but if you love great acting and stunning dialogue directed by an amazing mistress of her craft, the trip is more than worth it. One does not usually expect such a jewel in summer theatre and Where You Are by Kristen Da Silva, directed by Ellen David, knocked my socks off.
The talented and flawless Nadia Verrucci gives one of the most thrilling performances I have seen her deliver, and she hardly sings at all. Verrucci embodies the persona and shoots out a fabulous rapid fire delivery of zingers which are stunning. Her dialogue with Jane Wheeler who plays her sister is breathtaking. Wheeler manages to play a loose, aging hippy who also manages to be a controlling mother. She balances these contradictory traits magnificently and gives a delicious performance.
Jenna Wheeler-Hughes is the perfect ingénue for this family dramedy and plays wonderfully off the other two women, one of whom is her actual mother. The three women are almost balletic in their work on the lovely set, designed by Jonathan Brooks, and under the lovely lighting by Timothy Rodrigues.
This is a play by a hot new playwright, Kristen Da Silva, who delivers a family story which is not only delightful, it is inspiring. I certainly hope there will be many more like this. I do not mind driving through gnarly orange cones, detours, and ridiculous traffic to see a play so masterfully directed by Ellen David.
Get out of your comfortable Adirondack chair and head to Hudson to see this jewel.
