The legend is back! Comedyworks’ Grand Reopening Weekend
Reborn from the ashes like the phoenix bird, Comedyworks celebrated its reopening with some awesome comedy on a casual Thursday of February 5, 2014. To the ’80s music and candlelight, the cozy second floor of Comedyworks filled up quickly with comedy lovers of all ages.
Once the lights went off and the stage lit up, Peter J. Radomski (Just for Laughs, The Daily Show) jumped in with “Welcome the fuck back!” As usual, he captivated audience’s attention by joking about his appearance, and my favorite, Montreal’s subway etiquette, and winter. Peter was the MC for this special night, and as usual, he does make you cry from laughing!
Next up was Emma Wilkie. Originally from Vancouver, she started her career on this very stage three years ago. She covered the ridiculous laws related to print ads in Montreal. Scott Carter, also originally from Vancouver, explored the philosophical issue of what came first: the chicken salad or the egg salad? Although the answer remains unknown, he suggested a theory that the egg salad turns into chicken salad if left outside for a while.
Morgan O’Shea (Just For Laugh’s Homegrown Competition 2014), captivated the audience with his grumpy and sarcastic sense of humour, covering things like the Canadian medical system. In other words, you can drink, smoke and do lines, but as long as you add those flax seeds in your shakes every morning — you’ll be just fine. His energetic performance was awesome from the moment he stepped on stage and only got better throughout.
Finally, the man who charmed audiences around the globe with his sensitive inner world and his villainous face and a bad-ass biker jacket, Massimo (Just For Laughs, on Spike TV and even X-Men: Days of Future Past) jumped in the spotlight.
He shared how much the night meant to him, considering that 15 years ago, he first performed on that very stage, and now he’s headlining for its reopening. The nostalgia didn’t last for a long time though, and soon this Sicilian man made the room explode with laughter. First rows beware, he will talk to you — and it’ll be hilarious!
It’s so good to know that this cozy and welcoming spot is now reopened! New and improved, the place is renovated and according to Ian Campbell, the man who has been with the place for the longest time and Comedywork’s general manager, said there will be food in a month or so! Drinks are available year round!
The Grand Opening weekend is still going on so make sure you reserve your tickets as they go fast! The new and improved Comedyworks also has a parking for 5$ for the night. The last show of the Grand Opening weekend is tonight, February 7 at Comedyworks (1238 Bishop, 2 floor) at 8:30 pm and at 10:30 pm. Tickets: $15 ($10 for students).
